Terms & Conditions of Hire from Handmaid

Like all hire businesses, we have a few T&Cs that you accept when paying your deposit and hiring from us.  These aren't meant to be scary.  If you're thinking about hiring, Sadie Swoon, our caravan bar, then she has her own special agreement so just ask us about that.

1.  Availability

1.1  Please be aware that some vintage items (especially the china) may be different from those featured on the photos. Things do get broken or maybe rented elsewhere. Accordingly, when we confirm your booking, we are confirming your number of those items and not specific items. In saying that, if you do have a specific need, please let us know and we will do our best to meet your needs and desires of the style you prefer.

2.  Hire Period

2.1  Rates shown are for a 48 hour period to allow you to style before the event and pack down the day after.

2.2  Longer term contracts and rates are available.  If you need longer, please just ask!

3.  Delivery

3.1  Items can be picked up from us in Paraparaumu on the Kapiti Coast, or we can deliver/collect most items to you. There is an additional cost for delivery, depending on where that is. sizing and weight are restricted in these cases.

3.2  There is a delivery fee based on type, size and travel distance.  Prices below are an indication for small deliveries that can fit in a car but we base it on distance from our base, time to travel. and depending on the amount to be delivered.  If a trailer or truck is required the fee will be significantly more.  If you require both delivery and collection, please double the fee:

  • Paekakariki – Paraparaumu - $25-35

  • Otaihanga - Waikanae -$30-45

  • PekaPeka – Te Horo $45-55

  • Ōtaki - $50-$60

  • Manakau - $55-$65

  • Levin - $70-75

  • Pukerua Bay $40-50

  • Plimmerton - Paremata - $50-$55

  • Paremata – Porirua - $55-65

  • Wellington City -$75-85

  • Lower Hutt - $65-75

  • Upper Hutt - $70-80

3.3  We can deliver or pick up to most parts of the Wellington Region (although not the Wairarapa) and to parts of Horowhenua. To other places, a courier may be able to be used.

4.  Payment

4.1  Upon receipt of at least a 25% deposit, we will hold your desired pieces for your date.  Your balance and a bond of $50 will be due two weeks before your event, however, in some instances of larger numbers of hire items or more expensive items, we may require a $100 bond.

4.2  Your bond will be returned to you when Handmaid has received all hired items in good order and on time.  We will return it to the bank account from which it was paid unless we hear otherwise from you.

5.  Cancellation

5.1  Please let us know as soon as possible if you have to cancel. Please be aware we may have turned down other potential hires based on your booking so if you cancel between 14 days-eight days of the hire date, we will retain 50% of your hire fee as a cancellation fee.

5.2  If you cancel seven days or less of your event or do not let us know you wish to cancel, then this will result in the cost of the entire hire fee being retained by us.

6.  Return of Items

6.1  All items are to be returned in the condition they were originally hired. Customers are responsible for a repair/replacement fee for any items damaged during rental (see below).

6.2  All rental items must be returned clean and ready to be enjoyed.  For example, for hire of our rugs, please ensure they are free from grass and dirt marks before returning them and our candlestick holders free from wax

.Failure to return our items ready to be enjoyed by the next customer may result in your bond being forfeited.

6.3  All china must be hand-washed carefully and not put in a dishwasher.  Please place a cloth in the bottom of the sink as breakages may occur hitting the sink.

6.4  Late returns will be charged at 50% per hire for each item, per day.

7.  Broken or Ruined Items

7.1  Accidents and mishaps happen so we have a replacements charge for any items damaged. All items are checked on return. If an item does need to be replaced, for example, due to breakage or irreparable staining, then we will take that from your bond deposit and return the difference to you, if any. However, if the bond does not cover the cost, we will invoice you for the difference and require that it be paid within a week of the date of email to you.

7.2  As many of our items are vintage, particular care must be taken. Much of the china is very delicate and cannot be used in dishwashers or microwaves. Likewise, vintage linen must be hand-washed and cannot go in clothes dryers.

7.3  Please ask about the replacement charge of a particular item - these vary since many of the vintage items cannot be replaced with an exact item.

8.  Vintage Items

8.1  Please keep in mind that many of our items are vintage and have had a life before. Some do therefore have scars or hints of their age. We do our best to only have items for rent that are in good condition, but some items have been around for more than a century! For example, there may be some guild wear on china or markings on wood. We believe these marks add to the charm and rustic look. However, we do not hire any china to be used for food or drink that has chips on the usable surface.

8.2  We also have a number of select vintage-look items, which are great when you want consistency in the design. For example see our water bottles, handled mugs and a set of matching lace tablecloths.

If there is something you are interested in and do not see it, just let us know.  Those items may not have made it onto the website yet or we may be able to acquire them.  Please just ask!

Thank you!
